On Wednesday 26 November Inside Out invited us to their second Open for Inspection event, showcasing a sun-lit Bondi residence styled with Zanui homewares. It was a rare opportunity to hear design insights from stylist Jason Grant and Inside Out Editor Claire Bradley.
An astute extension has transformed this tranquil coastal home from a 1930s Californian bungalow into a chic modern abode. Featuring high ceilings and generous door frames, the architectural design evokes a spacious and inviting ambience.
From the street, this four bedroom + study house is unassuming, retaining elements from the original design in its cladding and simple elegance. And perhaps that’s where the true magic of this home resides – in the gradual unfolding of its spatial narrative.
Tracing a path through the foliage that fronts the house, you’re drawn through the intimacy of the bed and entertainment rooms to an expansive living/dining space with an enclosed garden beyond. Sleek louvres set just beneath the ceiling open up the room to the sky, spilling soft light from a height, whilst the bifold doors work to blur the lines between indoor and out.
This is the home of Belinda Everingham, owner of Bondi Wash, a range of natural household products derived from the Australian bush. So, it’s no surprise that nature features heavily in the overall design.
On all sides, oversized windows look out on greenery, from the feature wall of jasmine that takes the place of a splashback in the kitchen to the window of strident palms framing the banquette seating. Conversely, the landscaped garden becomes a kind of external room. Bordered on all sides with high hedges, it evokes an air of the secret garden, adding fragrant nuances to the aesthetic.
Fusing subdued metal finishes and glass with opulent neutrals, the palette throughout is relaxed yet sophisticated. Once again drawing the outside in, the open-plan lounge/dining room showcases a series of vignettes of Australian natives. These natural accents collude with the organic shapes within the furniture and rugs to soften the room’s clean-lined modernism.
The long lines of the furnishings and the sleek surfaces present the perfect space for vases and other decorative accents. The soft blonde timbers talk to the neutral hues, creating the perfect canvas for pops of colour. Jason has chosen décor accents to match the shades of the definitive artwork.
Décor elements establish and ground each zone to accommodate various uses at the same time: the pendant lighting installation above the dining table, the plush rug in the living area and the island in the kitchen. The result – a perfect family hub for the everyday or an entertainer’s dream.
In the master bedroom, textured neutrals reign. The delicacy of the sheers collaborates with the Sheridan Abbotson Quilted Bed Cover to create a rich and nuanced scheme. But the light fixtures are the heroes here, picking up the movement of the wall art to great effect.
Comfort is of the essence, with a daybed tucked in at the top of the stairs, promising breath-taking views of Bondi. Sleek shelving houses the entertainment unit as well as catering for bowls of shells and other knick-knacks to be displayed for a touch of charm. It is the ultimate parents’ retreat.
So there you have it – another foray into the glossy pages for Zanui. We’re a little bit proud, if a little bit envious as well. 😉 What a house!!!
