Getting Ready for Outdoor Entertaining

outdoor entertaining dining

We’re out of winter and into the warm months, so it’s time to consider our outdoor entertaining spaces!

Outdoor entertaining is, of course, possible in the cold season as well, but it’s a lot more fun in the sun. So whether you like to host friends outdoors, or like to escape outdoors alone, we’ve got the checklist to help you create your dream outdoor space.

Comfortable Seating

Obvious, but worth mentioning. You need to create a comfortable spot to sit if you want to head outdoors.

If you want to host…

The kind of seating you might want to consider is a lounge set, with multiple seats and maybe a matching coffee table. There are plenty of arrangements, you’re sure to find one that suits you. What you need to keep in mind is how many people you want to host.  (Though you can always keep a large, outdoor floor cushion or bean bag nearby for extra seating when you need it.)

If you want to escape alone…

Just one armchair is perfectly fine! Make it a bit more casual with an outdoor-friendly bean bag, more relaxation-ready with a reclining lounge, more soothing with a hammock, or more fun with a hammock chair.

You can match one armchair with a pair so you can relax with a loved one. You can even squish together for a romantic escape.

Space to Eat

There’s something so wonderful about enjoying a meal or even just a cup of coffee while watching the sun set, basking in the sun’s rays, or looking up at the stars. Keep in mind that weathering can damage certain furniture, so consider woods like teak that are outdoor-friendly, metal alloys that are resistant to rust, or even plastic as you choose your outdoor furniture. Not to mention you have to keep in mind what dining style you think best suits your space, and which aspects are essential in the space.

If you want to host…

A big table is a must! Keep in mind how many seats you want at the table. Six seats means a rectangular table of 160cm+ in length, a square table of 110cm+ in length/depth, and a round table of 120cm+ in diameter.  For a big, group arrangement, a casual seating option that is a bit more versatile than traditional chairs is the dining bench.

If you want to escape alone…

It there’s just one or two of you, a smaller arrangement is just fine! We love a cute bistro set with one dining table and two dining chairs. They’re perfect for enjoying a meal or relaxing with a drink!  Not to mention, these petite little arrangements don’t take up too much space so they’re perfect if you don’t have a big back yard, or if you want to use the rest of the yard for other activities.

Solo with others…

It’s important to make it cosy, whether you have a dining space, a lounge space, a combo, or something else entirely! A few cushions and throws can elevate the comfort level, not to mention they can help keep you warm if you want to stay in your outdoor entertaining space after the sun sets.
