The curtain has just dropped on New York Fashion Week, once again bringing the global fashion community to its knees. We’re following its lead to create en-vogue style in your interiors.

The best and bravest in international couture took to the runways to celebrate style over nine event-filled days. This year’s New York Fashion Week was bookended by Kanye West’s controversial Yeezy show on Roosevelt Island and Marc Jacobs’ glam rave trip. Pushing the envelope was par for the course.

There was a touch of fairytale and carnivale, femme ruffles, gem tones, cool metallic, even polka dots on offer. And word on the street says that nude neutrals are the new black (see NYFW’s vid here) – a fashion tip we can also follow for interiors, introducing earthy nudes as staple hues.

There was a celebration of summer with sandy hues and oasis blues and some truly intricate detailed work on show.

Here are a couple of our favourite style steals for your home.

Industrial attitude with Coach

Follow Coach’s lead and inject some urban edge to your interiors. Coach fired up the New York Fashion Week catwalk with a backdrop of junkyard cars for a charged industrial vibe.

It was all about attitude with references to Easy Rider, Priscilla and Elvis Presley. Ace. The palette was grounded in blacks with brassy red accents.

This striking biker style works equally well in your home with leather cushions, fringing and studded furniture and homewares. Working with distressed timber, leather and matte black finishes creates a masculine feel.

Add a pop of ruby red, lace and brazen florals for a pop of interest. For more info on jewel tones, see below.

Competing geometrics with Proenza Schouler

Proenza Schouler placed bold geometrics and high-vibe hues front and centre in their collection. Asymmetrical skirts and racy shapes met fringing and metallic to create a standout show.

Stripes are a simple addition to your space. If you’re looking to create a sharper on-trend look, work with converging stripes to draw the eye and add a touch of drama to your aesthetic.

Worried about it becoming OTT? Work with a neutral space. Then search out cushions and throws that demand attention. Or make a statement in monochrome by combining contrasting geometric designs, like these cushions from the Rapee collection.

Steal Proenza Schouler’s fusion of red and black with textured fringing! Create a base with the black Bambury Mongolian Lambswool cushion on your sofas and armchairs, then add something a little more strident. Dare yourself!

Femme florals and fifties style

Phillip Lim’s Midnight at the Victorian Rodeo show fused old-world chintz florals with a fifties feel. Working with a crisp white base, the detailing was intricate.

These finely nuanced florals were contrasted with solemn hues then accented with more contemporary elements, including zips and leather for statement contrast. All to a soundtrack of Patsy Cline. Divine.

Borrow from Lim’s aesthetic by drawing together Victorian laces, ruffles and old-world florals to accent your living and bedroom spaces.

Gem tones – colours to watch out for

New York Fashion Week saw the return of feminine silhouettes. But that doesn’t mean the colours were sedate! Far from it. The designers lit up the catwalk with radiant jewel tones, from ruby red to jade and amethyst.

Test out these in small doses if you’re colour-shy. Cushions, throws, wall art, vases and other décor accents offer great opportunities to add new tones to your home.
