Coming from meteorites and volcanoes, into jewellery stores and now into your home – the peridot gem has a long history and there’s a good reason why.

Tracing back to mining as early as 1500BC, the stunning yellowish-green stone is the national gem of Egypt, being adorned by pharaohs and even worn by Cleopatra. Ancient papyri tell us that they were mined on Topazo Island, now known as St. John’s Island, located on the Egyptian Red Sea.

The “evening emerald” was believed to be a talisman that holds powers to prevent nightmares and rid fear of the dark. We’d sleep better owning one too… but probably just because we love how it sparkles.

Happiness, friendship and love are also associated with legends of the peridot – all things we happen to associate with home too. Coincidence?

How to Style with Peridot Green

We’re taking inspiration from the gorgeous peridot, celebrating the month of August, and showing you how to implement the refreshing yet majestic colour in your décor with these few simple tips:

  • Peridot green shines best on a background of monochromes
  • It becomes the focal point of the space, so think of which area of the room you want attention drawn to
  • Unless trying to create a mismatched theme, avoid pairing with clashing colours – instead, complement with other shades of greens and blues to really maximise tranquillity
  • Greens relax our mind as a sign of peace and restoration, which is why we love it in the kitchen and bedroom
